STREETS UPDATE + CONTEST

Believe…

After five years sitting on the shelf, Jason Eisener‘s first feature film, STREETS OF DOMINATION, is inching leaping closer to completion!

The film has sat on the shelf for so long because STREETS’ writer John Davies and its director, Jason Eisener had to go make that HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN film. Spare time quickly became, and remains to be, a rarity for these two gents, which pushed STREETS to the back-burner.

Enter Glen (in hero stance).

I have taken on the task of editing a first-pass, rough-assembly of the film, which I will then hand off to Eisener for him to finish. This process is also known as movie magic.

So please, be excited. Lord knows I am.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I’ll be giving away 5 HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN comic books to readers of this blog! Simply head on over to the Contact page and drop me a line (be sure to include your email address)! Contest closes Monday, November 26th at 11:59pm EST and is open to residents of Canada and the USA.

Fun, right?

Check back on Tuesday, the 27th to see if you’ve won yourself a copy!

In the mean time, check out the STREETS OF DOMINATION teaser to whet your appetites:

TV PARTY PODCAST INTERVIEW

Hello folks! I am an incredible fan of the podcast format, so it is with much joy that I share with you today an interview I did for 88.1FM CKDU’s TV PARTY PODCAST!

The interview, hosted by Stephan MacLeod and Ryan Delehanty, is 94 minutes long, so turn off that Christmas special, download this sucker onto your iPhone, and go for a long walk (no, I don’t care how cold it is outside).

TV Party interviews actor extraordinaire Glen Matthews about his failed quest to become a professional wrestler, learning to act, his roles in Hobo with a Shotgun, the Corridor, Streets of Domination, Game, Roller Town and much more.

To download my episode, as well as interviews with Josh MacDonald (writer of THE CORRIDOR), Jason Eisener (director of HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN), Mark Palermo (writer of DETENTION) as well as many others, please visit http://www.mediafire.com/?7r92bt7eiy51c

MacLeod and Delehanty told me that they plan to have the episodes of TV PARTY PODCAST available via iTunes later on in 2012, so be ready to do some subscribin’.

Happy holidays, everyone! I’ll be posting my top 11 films of 2011 list in a few days (movies I watched, not movies I was in — that would be exceptionally narcissistic) so stay tuned for that and be ready to argue with me!

“HOBO” ONE OF CANADA’S BEST

Jason Eisener‘s HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN has been named one of Cananda’s Top Ten Feature Films of 2011 by the Toronto Internation Film Festival!

I was fairly certain that a very successful DVD & BluRay release would have been the cherry on top of this whole HOBO-experience, but yesterday’s announcement really took the cake (on which the cherry rests). I think the “HOBO-experience” can officially be upgraded to “HOBO-phenomena”.

I would like to congratulate my friends Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill, as well as everyone else who worked on the film for the outstanding success that this film has seen. Also, major kudos to TIFF for having the cojones to stand behind a film like HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, that could so easily ignored, and pushed aside as “just another grindhouse flick”.

Oh my, who is that amazing young actor in the yellow mask going toe to toe with Rutger Hauer?

It was me. That was me.

Congrats to all the other filmmakers, as well as the folks at Grassfire Films, Ashley McKenzie and Nelson MacDonald, as their amazing short film, RHONDA’S PARTY (also shot here in Nova Scotia) was named one of Canada’s Top Ten Short Films! For the full list of films, head on over to the TIFF website: http://tiff.net/topten

FYI: Two of Canada’s Top Ten Feature Films can be rented now on YouTube for only $5! HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN (YouTube link) as well as Ken Scott‘s STARBUCK (YouTube link). Support Canadian film!

PS. Blog note: I’ve finally sat down and updated the Photos section of the website, so head on over and take a gander: https://glenjm.wordpress.com/photos/!

THE CORRIDOR AT FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL!

Great news to announce today: THE CORRIDOR will be included as part of one of the greatest film festivals in North America, Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal! The festival, which specializes in genre filmmaking, has been relentlessly showcasing the best in “off-kilter” cinema for the past fifteen years. Mr. Quentin Tarantino had this to say about INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS‘ inclusion in the 2009 lineup…

I was thrilled that my film, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, made its North American premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia, as they are the most important and prestigious genre film festival on this continent.

THE CORRIDOR, a horror-thriller about male-bonding and miscommunication (THE BIG CHILL slammed into THE THING), is set to hit the Fantasia screens twice:

-Thursday July 21 – 7:25pm at JA De Seve Cinema &
-Monday July 25 – 1:00pm, once again at JA De Seve Cinema!
Tickets will be made available soon at the Fantastic Fest website.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Myself, along with co-stars Stephen Chambers, Jim Gilbert & David Patrick Flemming, as well as director Evan Kelly and writer Josh MacDonald will all be in attendance for the screening on the 21st, followed by a Q&A. I sadly won’t be in Montreal for the screening on the 25th, and since I’m completely self-involved, I have no idea what’s on slate for that screening.

President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Brent Simon gave THE CORRIDOR an A- rating in his review

This a fabulously effective feature debut for Kelly, and a work that bodes well for all of the talent involved, both on screen and behind the camera.

I’m apparently going quote-crazy this blog entry, but I couldn’t help but share HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN director, Jason Eisener‘s thoughts on THE CORRIDOR, stolen from his Tumblr page

With director Evan Kelly, and the amazing cast, they created a beautiful suspense film. Each character has attributes we can all connect with, and when the pressure of the Corridor comes down hard on this group of friends, you can’t help but feel like you’re stuck in the middle of the suspense.

Please come out to our quaint, little cabin in the woods. We would love to have your company…

Also at the fest is Joseph Kahn‘s DETENTION, written by the spiteful-Haligonian (I kid, I kid), Mark Palermo! Check out the loaded Fantasia program over @ http://www.fantasiafestival.com/2011/en/

See you all in the city of love (?)!

HOBO ON DVD/BLURAY THIS TUESDAY!

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN is approaching the final stop on the publicity-rails as it’s DVD/BluRay release is this Tuesday, July the 5th! Rejoice!

Check out that badass pop-up cover (above) found in the HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN BluRay. I challenge anyone to find another actor with 2 minutes of screen time more prominently featured in such an extensive advertising campaign. That’s talent.

The DVD/BluRay will be released all across the great expanse of North America, so save up your nickels and dimes and run out this Tuesday to pick up this ridiculously packed package.

Magnet Releasing (obviously along with Eisener, Cotterill & Davies) really must be commended for putting together such a solid disc featuring…

  • MORE BLOOD, MORE HEART, the fantastic, in-depth making-of featurette, which I had the pleasure of viewing a rough cut of. You really need to see it. So well done.
  • An interview with Jason, Rutger and Fangoria’s Mike Gingold (35-40 mins).
  • Two commentary tracks (which I can’t wait to hear): (1) Jason Eisener & Rutger Hauer, & (2) Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill, and the original Hobo, the immortal Dave Brunt!
  • Deleted scenes, an alternate ending, & video blogs.
  • The fake-trailer contest winner, the exquisite VAN GORE from Keith Hodder, Jerrad Pulham & Peter Strauss.
  • Shotgun-Mode (which I believe is exclusive to the BluRay) where even more behind-the-scenes footage is revealed as you’re watching the film.
J. Hurtado over at my personal favourite film-news website, TwitchFilm wrote a review for the HOBO BluRay wherein he says…
This is a massive and mighty package for an explosive film that deserves all the attention it can get.  Jason Eisener is a major emerging talent, and he really deserves a lot of credit, along with his crew, for making an outstanding film that captures the spirit of a bygone era of film making without becoming cloying or nudging the audience too hard to acknowledge the joke.  This is no joke.  Magnet Releasing’s Blu-ray release of Hobo with a Shotgun is HIGHLY REOMMENDED.
Pick it up this Tuesday!
PS. Happy Canada Day!

BUILDING THE GLENJMPIRE: CHAPTER 8

From Chapter One: “The primary purpose of ‘Building the GlenJMpire’ for me, is to figure out how I got to where I’m at today, by having a look back at every step along the way. In other words, I am very forgetful.”

I had taken a healthy break from writing the chapters of my long-awaited memoirs once the novelty of doing so had worn off and it started to just feel rather masturbatory.

Well hold on to yer butts because the novelty is back! Need a refresher? Read Chapter Seven: YouBoob The Musical.

CHAPTER EIGHT:
“Movie Magic”
Spring 2006

I felt like a nervous wreck going into my meeting with the creators of THE TEETH BENEATH, Jason Eisener & John Davies regarding their upcoming feature film STREETS OF DOMINATION. This was my first experience with “networking”, but Jason and John quickly calmed my nerves by buying me a beer and launching into their pitch.

Since the whole be-a-professional-wrestler plan fell apart, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. As they told me more and more about their film, it became pretty damn clear that this was it.

During the conversation the two of them referenced a million different movies, all of which I told them I had never seen, instantly provoking an explosive “WHAT?!” from both of them. Their enthusiasm for the films they were describing really lit a fire inside of me, a fire that I hadn’t felt since the pro-wrestling ship sank. They wanted to create something that they absolutely loved, and there was no way that they  were going to be stopped.

By the end of the conversation, they gave me the script and we went our separate ways. A week later, I received an email informing me that they cast me as Billy Chambers, the mother-effing lead in STREETS OF DOMINATION! You best believe that there was some bedroom dancing that day.

The stars had re-aligned and my attention had officially shifted to acting.

This prompted me to sign up and audition for Neptune Theatre’s Pre-Professional Training Program, an eight-month training program for actors where I would hopefully begin to hone my talents, along with a handful of friends who I had met while working on JUMP! AN 80’S MUSICAL.

We started shooting STREETS OF DOMINATION and I instantly, absolutely, shamelessly fell in love with filmmaking. The long hours, the comradery, the sacrifice; these were all things that I was preparing myself for in a life as a professional wrestler. All of the fun, without the crippling chronic-pain? Sign me up!

That’s not to say that filmmaking (especially non-union filmmaking) isn’t without it’s dangers: (1) on the first few days of shooting, we had to drive a car that had no brakes (not part of the script), (2) cliff-jumping, (3) we crashed the car with no brakes while I was on the trunk (twice), (4) giant, un-choreographed fights with real weapons, (5) Eisener was chained to a motorcycle and dragged behind it on a gravel road, and many, many more stories of “how did no one get hurt there?”

After a couple months, due to the changing seasons and everyone’s lives starting back up in September, we took a hiatus from shooting, deciding to start back up in the Spring. I was accepted into Neptune Theatre School, so I would be attending PPTP in the Fall.

The ball was officially rolling.

***

That’s all for Chapter 8 of “Building the GlenJMpire”, but I wanted to let you know that you can watch the trailer for STREETS OF DOMINATION, right damn now!..

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The film is 99% shot, but Mr. Jason Eisener and John Davies had to go and make HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN before finishing it, so it’s officially been placed on the back-burner. It’s simmering.

Someday it will be released, and I think people will really be shocked with what we were able to put together with no resources. It could very easily go down as one of the single-most ambitious no-budget films ever made.

Keep your interest piqued.

To my Streets brothers, Owen Bonnar, John Han, Mike Hampson, Peter Hughson, Anthony Wicks: Keep hope alive.

UPDATED DEMO REEL & YOUTUBE

Check out my updated demo reel featuring clips from (1) HAVEN, (2) HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, and (3) THE CORRIDOR

Vodpod videos no longer available.

About four years ago, YouTube deleted my entire account (videos included) due to me repeatedly uploading videos including copyrighted materials. Ever since, I’ve been scared to return to the land of YouTube, fearing that they would chase me out of their digital-town with digital-pitchforks.

I’m happy to say that I’ve made my glorious return to the Tubes of You, and so far, no pitchforks or torches have been spotted. I’m actually quite impressed with the level of customization available to YouTube users now, and I managed to chuck together a snazzy little design for my Channel.

So from here on out, all things video-related will be found over at youtube.com/GlenJMatthews

So head on over, and click “Subscribe” in the top left-hand corner to stay up to date with my doings, until the YouTube overlords come and escort me away.

PS. Happy birthday to me!

HOBO FAN ART

Since HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN‘s release in cinemas in Canada and across television & computer screens in the United States, there has been a rather vocal community of inspired cinephiles sharing beautiful, twisted works of art that were inspired by Eisener’s film. Shown above is Andrew Klass AKA Middle Man Art’s (http://middlemanart.com/) artwork featuring my masked mug as The Gang Leader.

This gets filed in the “Neat” category of life.

A few more absurdities…

Left: That’s a tattoo. A tattoo FOR LIFE! Center: A gem created by Andrew Barr, featuring The Plague. Right: This gorgeous painting deserves to be atop a fireplace. Beautifully done by Barbi Jollota.

More artwork has been featured over at Jason’s Tumblr page (http://jasoneisener.tumblr.com/). For now, enjoy one last piece of work, created by myself: this was my interpretation of how I thought the film should play out…

…pretty good suggestion, eh?

CANADA: HOBO W/ A SHOTGUN OPENS FRIDAY!

Check out this incredible artwork for the upcoming issue of Rue Morgue Magazine (hitting magazine-stands April 1st) created by Gary Pullin.

Well the time has come folks, this Friday, March 25th, HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN will be taking Canadian cinemas by force.  I caught the film for the fourth time last night at the Toronto premiere, and I’m still amazed by the film’s pacing. It’s relentless. Tonight, my heart is in Halifax as it’s having its hometown premiere at the Oxford Theatre; I can’t wait to hear what everyone back home thinks of it!

Photo from last night’s Q&A, which I graciously took part in.

IMPORTANT: Please try and make time to catch HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN this weekend! The Canadian film market tends to rely heavily on results of the opening weekend to determine the length of a film’s theatrical run, so (even if you get a chance to catch a preview screening) get your butt out to the cinema and buy your ass a ticket!

If you’re in Nova Scotia, you’ll have to watch HOBO where it all began; the film will be screening at Empire Theatres Dartmouth Crossing and Park Lane (Halifax). In Toronto, HOBO will be screening at Eglinton Town Centre, Empire Theatres at Empress Walk, Queensway Cineplex, Scarborough Coliseum, Scotiabank Theatre (Paramount).

Spread the word! Buy tickets! Go forth and multiply!

PS. Check out director Jason Eisener on George Stroumboulopoulos’ show this Friday on CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/strombo/)!

Update 25/3/11: Please enjoy another photo from Toronto’s premiere which provides evidence of my involvement in the Q&A…
…I generally look less impish when I’m not standing next to a 6’5″ martial arts expert.

Last but not least, I had to share my favourite tweet in regards to the HOBO trailers playing on television–perhaps my favourite tweet of all-time…
The best.

That’s all for now. Go out and see this film, you idiot!

HOBO THE VIDEO GAME

File this one under “Pretty neat”. In the run-up to HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN‘s screening down in Austin, Texas for SXSW, The Alamo Drafthouse along with Mondo, Powerhouse Animation, and Perfect Dork Studios have teamed up to create a 16-bit side-scrolling, beat-em-up video game for the iPhone!

Prettay, prettayy, prettayyy neat.

Wired picked up the story: Retro Hobo With a Shotgun Game Blasts Onto iOS

The game is available right now in the iTunes Store for the dirt-low price of $2.99! Wash yer thumbs and preserve your ammo! http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/hobo-with-a-shotgun/id425315735?mt=8
